Summary: Introduction: The artisanal fishing activity developed in the State of Espírito Santo
plays a fundamental role in the economic subsistence of coastal communities,
representing a crucial source of livelihood for several families. The importance of this
practice transcends the purely economic aspect, also encompassing cultural and
social aspects, establishing an intrinsic link between communities and the
environment. Despite being a vital activity for these communities, the generation of
waste from fishing processing emerges as a significant challenge for the fishing
sector. The way in which this waste is currently managed reveals a worrying
irregularity, resulting in considerable negative environmental impacts. This
inadequate management not only compromises the quality of marine ecosystems,
but also contributes to large-scale environmental manipulation. The central focus of
this research lies in understanding the crucial role of artisanal fishing in the
environmental impacts associated with fishing activity in the Municipality of
Marataízes/ES. The problem in question is intrinsically linked to the pressing need to
establish effective management of solid waste resulting from fish processing. This
urgency is based on the imperative demand for preventive measures capable of
containing environmental degradation and mitigating the damage caused by this
activity. Thus, the main objective was to evaluate the environmental impacts
resulting from the irregular disposal of waste from artisanal fishing in the ports of
Barra do Itapemirim and Pontal, located in the municipality of Marataízes/ES. To this
end, the following specific objectives were outlined: Evaluate the profile of the
fishing community, compiling information on sociodemographic, economic and
environmental characteristics; diagnose the way in which fish waste is disposed of by
these local communities of artisanal fishermen and the environmental impact
generated; examine the composition of waste from fish processing, through the
identification and quantification of the different types of waste generated by this
practice in the region. The methodology adopted in this study integrated both
qualitative and quantitative approaches. Initially, the assessment of the profile of
artisanal fishermen involved the application of forms, following a documentary
methodological approach. This stage covered aspects identified in the diagnosis,
including the disposal of waste resulting from fish processing. To analyze the
composition of the waste generated, characterizations were carried out through
physical, chemical and nutritional analyses, providing a comprehensive
understanding of the waste generated in the process. Based on the results and
analyzes conducted in this research, it was possible to characterize the profile of
fishermen and the fishing activity of the communities studied. Furthermore, it was
possible to understand the composition of fish waste, highlighting the significant
presence of lipids, proteins and energy. These findings are of great relevance, as
they highlight the disposal of waste generated in fishing activities, which have the
potential to cause environmental impacts on the marine ecosystem and local coastal
areas. Therefore, it is essential to adopt public policies aimed at promoting the
sustainability of artisanal fishing and promoting the efficient use of natural resources.
