Summary: Waste pickers are in the basis of the productive recycling chain and are also mainly responsible for the recovery of post-consumption dry residue. The approval of the Brazilian Solid Waste Policy (BSWP) consolidated their inclusion in solid waste management. However, it is still necessary to know these workers deeper since the lack of statistics, especially on municipal or regional level, hinders the planning of the integrated urban solid waste management. To this end, this paper aims at tracing the socioeconomic profile of the waste pickers that are organized in cooperatives and/or associations in the State of Espírito Santo as well as assessing the effect of this profile on the main dysfunctions of this sort of solidarity economy endeavor (EES). In order to achieve that, 24 EESs (23 associations and 1 cooperative) in 20 municipalities in Espírito Santo have been chosen and a semi-structure questionnaire has been applied to 215 of their associates to gather socioeconomic information regarding their demographics, education, housing, work and income. The results have shown that 60.5% of the associates are female, the minimum and maximum age ranging from 15 to 19 years (0.9%) and 70 to 74 years (2.3%) respectively. The level of schooling is low: 21.4% of the associates are illiterate, yet 59.3% have expressed desired to resume their studies. Most of them live in permanent particular residences (98.6%), being 61.79% adequate. Their salary range varies from R$ 220 (13.5%) to R$ 881 – R$ 1,760 (24.2%). 46.04% of the interviewees stated they depend exclusively on the association’s income; 46 of these claiming this to be their only family income. The dysfunctions that are related to this socioeconomic profile were: companies and communities’ suspicion of the waste pickers’ work, lack of specialized technical support, low level of knowledge about the associativist culture and absence of verticalizing practices of the production process.
