Summary: Photovoltaic solar energy is a fundamental way for the sustainable development and diversification of the national electricity matrix. With the increase in fossil fuel prices coupled with growing environmental concerns, this energy source emerges as a clean energy alternative, especially after the formulation and implementation of the New Model of the Brazilian Electric Sector, which established mechanisms to increase the competitiveness of alternative sources of energy against the conventional sources. Brazil is privileged to be a country located in the intertropical region, possessing high levels of insolation for the use of solar energy throughout the year.
Traditionally, electric power systems are composed of large producers that supply energy to different customers through transmission and distribution networks, and this transmission model is known as centralized. Currently, the trend is the introduction of decentralization in the electricity generation through distributed generation of energy. From this perspective, this study aimed to present the main fiscal incentive, regulatory and public financing policies for photovoltaic solar energy in systems connected to the grid in Brazil, highlighting the economic aspects and future prospects for centralized and distributed photovoltaic generation in the country.
